Single accident aside, Hiawatha Light Rail is still a success

The Hiawatha Light Rail had its first major accident on Sept. 25, when an 87-year-old man driving his car crossed paths with the train and was killed.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Arnold Iverson of Minneapolis was on his way to
Target when his car was hit by the 107,000-pound train. He had accidentally driven underneath the crossing arm.

The train travels at speeds between 35 and 55 miles per hour, and there are warning lights where streets intersect with the railway.

The Star Tribune reported that Iverson wasn’t traveling at high speeds when he collided with the light rail and that he had medical conditions that could have influenced his lack of awareness of the train.

The light rail, which began construction in January of 2001, opened to passengers on June 26, 2004.

According to the Metropolitan Rail Office, the project cost $715.3 million to complete. With its 17 stations spanning 12 miles, the Hiawatha Light Rail is expected to carry nearly 24,800 riders per day by the year 2020.

Despite the tragedy, the light rail continues to operate, with new routes connecting to the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America to be completed by early December.

To ride the rail, a passenger must pay $1.25 for off-peak hours and $1.75 during rush hour. The metro bus system operates on the same fares.

On its opening weekend, 96,000 people took advantage of the offered free ride and jumped on board the new trains.

Easy access to and from the trains, with park and rides and connections to the metro-transit bus system, add to the light rail’s convenience.

Trains run every 7 1/2 minutes during rush hour, every 10 minutes during base times and every 15 minutes in the early evening.

When complete, the light rail system will boast 25 cars that can each carry 187 passengers.
