Defending conference champion Macalester downs women's soccer team

Macalester handed Hamline's women's soccer team their third loss on the season on Wednesday night by blanking the Pipers 3-0.

The Pipers played well defensively, but were unable to generate much offense against the much stronger Macalester team.

The Scot forwards were continually frustrated when Hamline defenders thwarted plays and intercepted passes. Piper goalkeeper Betsy Seal earned 17 saves in the match.

The Pipers were able to hold off the nationally ranked Macalester squad for the first 24 minutes, but Scot Sarah Marsh put her head on a ball during confusion after a Macalester corner kick from Cara Goff for the Scots' first goal at the 24:23 mark.

Less than two minutes later, Marsh would score her second goal of the match - another header off a Goff corner kick.

The Pipers were able to hold off the Scots until after the break. Macalester's third and final goal came off yet another header when Annie Borton deflected a Katie Pastorius cross behind Piper keeper Seal at the 62:23 mark.

Things are looking good for the Pipers, as Macalester, who came into the match ranked number one in the MIAC conference, was only able to score one goal during the normal flow of the game and were held to only two goals off 11 corner kicks.

The Pipers were more successful in their Sept. 18 game against Viterbo, where they tied 1-1. Senior co-captain Vanessa McClellan scored the lone goal for Hamline, assisted by first-year Anna McMahon. Though the game went into double overtime, the Pipers were unable to net a second goal for the win.

Hamline will next play Simpson College on Sunday afternoon at Pat Paterson Fields. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
