A student congress I can’t live with

Ever since I came to Hamline, I’ve been involved with the student congress in some way or another. Whether as a student representative, the technology coordinator, or as the congress’ arch-nemesis, the Oracle editor in chief, I’ve always somehow been caught up in the politics and petty excitement of the student congress.

Now, after witnessing the first student congress meeting of the year, I have my doubts as to whether I can stomach it anymore.

I don’t know what happened to mečmaybe it was all that beer in Germanyčbut I can’t find value in strife and hurt feelings and vindictiveness anymore.

Maybe I’ve grown up.

Maybe I’ve grown soft.

All I know is that I wish student congress would actually change.

I wish that it could change, but I’m still not convinced that it is possible.

I remember a time during my freshman year when I was caught up with the politically wrong crowdčthen-Board of Elected Representative Chair B. Steve Messick’s crowdčthat was planning to push some sort of amendment on the yearly budget through the congress using parliamentary dirty tricks and schmoozing and intimidating.

I think that kind of politics at Hamline has, thankfully, died off. It’s no longer us v. them.

No, it’s not that organized anymore. Now it’s just us v. ourselves.

Last Tuesday, a young woman who wants only to help student organizations make Hamline an enjoyable place was brought to the brink of tears by inappropriately vicious questioning on the floor of the General Assembly. It wasn’t what was asked, but howčthere’s no need to bring a negative perspective to the student congress and unload it on another fellow student.

The chair of the General Assembly did his best to keep order, but Robert’s Rules can’t do much about snide interrogations and destructive attitudes. The chair has and should exercise the power to silence those who are disrespectful in order to promote a positive place for everyone.
But the responsibility to keep the student congress a civil environment doesn’t fall on the shoulders of the president and the vice-president, or even on the executive board.

The responsibility falls on everyone who steps into 100E at convo hour on Tuesday morning.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who felt uncomfortable at last week’s meeting...so why didn’t anyone speak up?

I tried to do my best by cracking jokes and lightening the mood, but I now realize that I should have directly lambasted the negativity being directed at the newly appointed Student Organizations Committee chair.

If we’re just going to continue to attack each other and play those little political games, then there is absolutely no way the congress can win the respect of the student body that rightfully considers us worse than a debating societyčstudents see us congress as a bickering society with a checkbook.

The president and vice-president have an agenda to make student congress friendlier to the student body, and I hope it succeeds. But it definitely won’t if the kind of behavior witnessed last Tuesday morning is allowed to continue.

Thank goodness that no-nonsense former Oracle editor and congress presidential candidate Erika Lade stepped in to call people out for their “grilling” of Suzanne Christ.

We need more people willing to take a stand for civility and respect, and I promise to do my part this semester.

Okay, so I fully admit that the ending to this was quite cheesy.

But what do you think can be done about HUSC--what does the student congress need to do to make students feel comfortable going to the general assembly. Is there anything it can do to make itself more positively relevant in the life of the average student?

It's the little things. I think the ideas for coffee and snacks in the library during midterm/finals are going to go a long way and be very popular students. As far as the general meetings go...I don't know, I think some humor is desperately needed.

I guess we are trying to do our best. We're always looking for feedback, but if it doesn't come our way, then its harder to gauge what people are thinking. It would be nice if people let us know so we had a chance to change before they give up on us. Because I really want it to change. But if I don't have a measuring stick, I can't evaluate it, can I?!

Well, I don't live with it any more. I just resigned from Exec Board, but not really because of this issue. I just don't have the time to do all the things an Exec Board member is expected to do. I'll still try to help the congress along though, however that may be.

You're right Graham, you weren't the only one who felt uncomfortable at last week's HUSC meeting. I felt extremely uncomfortable when a white, straight, fully abled, Christian woman was allowed to avoid the topic of diversity. A significant amount of the student orgs that the SOC Chair is in place to work for are advocacy orgs that have a vested interest in the SOC Chair's concept of diversity. Why should the members of these organizations be forced to vote on someone to represent them before they know if this person truly has their best interests at heart? I don't feel that this questioning was unreasonable, what was unreasonable was the willingness on the part of HUSC to let the issue slide. Yes, the questioning could have been handled with more civility, but you can't blame people for getting defensive and upset when their questions are blatantly being ignored. Maybe that is why HUSC does not have the respect of the students.

I was going to say something, but people got a little nasty even for my harsher than average tastes. My biggest gripe was her completely lying about her involvement with organizations...she's listed both Spectrum and WASP as orgs she'd been involved with. Her involvement with Spectrum included writing me an e-mail once saying she was interested and then never showing up for a single meeting or event. And she never came to WASP, I should know I'm a founding memeber of the group and was at every meeting for it, she never showed. It's just tacky in my opinion to lie about your involvement with orgs when trying to become the SOC chair.

Matt - to answer your question, those facts are relevant to bring up because identifying as members of those groups, being female notwithstanding, she has never been the member of a "minority" (read: disenfranchised) group. It is fully acceptable to bring up these facts when considering her position on diversity, as she very well may not know what it is like to have to deal with issues of diversity on a daily basis. If she is able to truly represent all of her constituents as SOC Chair, she needs to be able to understand what all of her constituents go through and what their orgs stand for. Being the member of the majority, she is allowed to not have to talk about or think about diversity, and that alone is what scares me. As long as she learns to openly talk about diversity and represent advocacy orgs I think she will do a fine job. But she hasn't convinced me yet, and her avoidance of the question didn't help.

Or would the campus prefer that Suzanne Christ was: Jewish, Hmong, South Asian, African, Caucasian, Homoesexual, Heterosexual, Latina, Democrat, Republican or Native American or a mixture thereof?

Can she represent someone who is in Rockstars when she doesn't climb?

Can she represent HORC (Hamline Outdoor Recreation Club) when she has never been camping?

Can she represent HUUF (Hamline University Ultimate Frisbee) when she can't throw a disc?

Can she represent Habitat for Humanity if she can't swing a hammer?

Can she represent Mamadada if she can't fingerpaint?

Can she represent Knitwits if she can't knit?

Can she represent HUPAD (HU Pool and Darts) if she can't hit a cue ball?

Can she represent HEAT if she doesn't like entertainment?

So put your fingers on your keyboard and email her until she gives you an answer. Call her until she picks up. Leave messages on her voicemail until her message box is full. Knock on her door until it opens. Visit her at the HUSC office (she is required to keep 3 hours a week there).

Quit complaining that she has dodged it (Which I agree, she did) and make her answer it. If you don't, you are the only one to blame.

Now, for those of us who were in HUSC that day (as I was), how many of us there were mad that she dodged the question (or refrained even from giving a partial answer)?

Of that group, how many emailed/called/contacted Suzanne about her definition of diversity? If you did not, again, you take the blame.

For those of you who asked questions, you know (and I know) who you are. What did you do post-assembly?

Lastly, if you were pissed off at her, why did the assembly approve her nomination? If I recall, which the HUSC website so wonderfully does, the "Motion passed with simple majority vote."

If HUSC reps are so concerned about diversity (which I believe most are), then was her approval a mistake? Oops, I guess.

Or was it just a case of apathy?

As for Christ's involvement with student orgs, I am not going to argue that point, as I have no bearing. However, the jury is still out.

I think it is important, if you feel strongly about this issue, to address it with the person concerned, rather than to do it in the third person over this comments section. I think its great to give commentary on opinions and articles, but when you start to attack people, I think its important that you put your money where your mouth is and address these issues with the people concerned. There is also the issues and concerns section in HUSC where you can publicly make your stance, as that is the appropriate forum for concerns about why a vote was taken a particular way. None of these concerns have been brought to General Assembly in the 2 meetings after the one mentioned, nor has anyone that I know of been approached.
I think what is most important is creating a respectful environment in HUSC, and I do not believe the way questions were asked, regardless of their intention, was appropriate in any way, shape or form, and will NOT be tolerated at future meetings. Emotion is fine, attacks are not, and the difference between the two is the medium of respect which all students deserve at General Assembly. I also think that it is the place of the orgs that work with such issues to decide whether or not the person concerned will do what they need her to, and I would hope that they would be able to talk with her or me should the concern arise at any point, which they have not, to date. Finally, should anyone have a concern about my appointment of any Executive Board member, they should to bring their concerns to me. There is also the forum of PAC, where grievances/complaints can be brought and investigated in a formal way if people feel strongly about the role of any individual in HUSC.
Should anyone have a concern about the majority of General Assembly ruling in favor of a motion, (NOT a majority of roll call in this case), then I am afraid that the concern is directed at the fundamentals of a democracy, not at what happened, or is based at a personal level that outweighs the concern at hand, about which I and HUSC can do nothing!
But if this is simply idle talk, I would encourage the authors to realize that personal attacks, especially ones that they do not address to the appropriate parties, are not only inappropriate, but they are also a venom none of us would like to have directed at us without at least being confronted first. We live in a small community, and the only way it will work is if we can accord everyone the respect we expect to have them accord us, no matter what our personal issues are. All we need to do is COMMUNICATE.

Shannon, get yourself out of your race based mentality as soon as you can. Its all for one and one for all in the real world.

Here is a thought you should pass along to your friends Carlos, Javier, and the leaders of the diversity orgs. Many "majority" people at Hamline and in HUSC do participate or want to particpate more in "minority" organizations and events. If you want them to participate, start by not belittling them in front of their peers. Your statements will only encourage others to give up.

Ya'all can argue about it all you want, I'd rather stay out of the fray, but all I have to say is that Suzanne has told me she did not have a problem with the questions that were asked of her. Also, as the Chair, there were no questions which were asked that I could have stepped in and stopped. Sure, there are times when I will, but the line that is drawn by Robert's Rules was not breached, and until then, I'm powerless.

Pesko, dude. You're in control of the General Assembly. You can do whatever the hell you want--no need to prove that Robert's Rules have been breached, man. If that were the case, you could a Robert's Rules Robot that would preside over meetings. The chair is there to exercise her or his discretion and keep the meetings orderly and productive... there doesn't need to be some violation of the rules before you step in and take action.
