Roundtable speaker lineup announced

For its 10th anniversary, Hamline’s own International Roundtable Series has once again provided a varied group of informed speakers focused on international issues. The series are discussion-based presentations led by Hamline University faculty or campus visitors sponsored by the Global Studies program and the Howard and Darrel Alkire Chair in International Business and Economics.

The roundtable series were originally part of the Introduction to Global Studies class, but in recent years the invitation has been extended to the whole campus.

In October, Hamline CLA professor David Davies will present “Made in China.”

Davies took an Extended May Term class to China last spring and will do so again this May. His discussion will focus on the cultural dimensions of globalization in China.

Also in October, Philosophy Department Chair Nancy Holland will host a roundtable discussion entitled “Ideologies of Modernity.” Holland recently wrote an article for the Hamline magazine on modernity and she is also teaching a philosophy/global studies course entitled “Modernity and Globalization” this fall.

Last year, Assistant Professor Mark Berkson, who teaches classes on Buddhism and Islam in Hamline’s religion department, spoke at the roundtable on the topic “Global and Local Islam.” This November, he shifts focus to Buddhism, with a presentation entitled “Global and Local Buddhisms.”

After midterm break, the series will continue with Tanya Forte from Ben-Gurion University in Israel. She is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Macalaster College.
She has spent years researching Middle Eastern media, including close analysis of Al Jazira and other Arabic networks. Her lecture will focus on the international media coverage of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

According to Van Dusenbery, CLA professor and Global Studies chair, fall semester usually tries to bring as wide a focus as possible to the table, while spring semester usually follows a theme, which he tentatively billed as focusing on the politics of identity.

“Globalization is a multi-faceted phenomenon,” said Dusenbery.

“One needs to look at the social, political, cultural, economic and environmental aspects of it,” he said. “We try to bring in as many fields as possible to examine it.”

The roundtable discussions take place every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in GLC 1S.
