Respondus LockDown Browser What is the Respondus LockDown Browser? Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard. The LockDown Browser is already functional within the Hamline Blackboard environment; faculty only need to enable the option to use the LockDown feature when publishing an exam. When LockDown is enabled, students are not able to navigate between windows, copy, paste, print, etc., to give them an advantage while taking an exam. For more information, please see the Lockdown Browser Instructor Quick Start Guide or view this introductory video. Two LockDown Browser Updates Within Blackboard courses, instructors now have the option to allow students to exit exams early. Prior to this change, if a student started an exam in LockDown Browser, they were not able to exit out of the exam without submitting it first. If the exam was set up for a single attempt, then the instructor would need to do some work to allow additional exam attempts. Now, if a student exits an exam early, they will be prompted to ensure that they want to leave the exam. Then, a comment box will appear, which will require the student to submit their reason for leaving the exam, a comment that the instructor can view. More information on this change can be found here: http://www.respondus.com/products/lockdown-browser/studentexit.shtml. Starting in May, 2014, Respondus Inc. will be updating student-installed editions of the LockDown Browser tool. This is the result of 70% of the support issues they received in 2013 being due to the user employing an outdated version of the tool. User instances will be updated appropriately when the program starts in a “fast and seamless manner,” according to Respondus. Using Respondus LockDown Browser in an Exam Faculty do not need to download and install the LockDown Browser to apply the LockDown functionality within Blackboard. However, the LockDown Browser needs to be installed on a student’s computer in order for them to take a locked test. The LockDown Browser is currently available on both Sorin and Bush Library lab computers, but can be installed on students' personal computers as well. Feel free to distribute the LockDown Browser installation link to students. Note: Both exams created in Respondus as well exams previously created in Blackboard can be used with the Lockdown Browser. Informing Students About the LockDown Browser If you are teaching a course that will require students to use the LockDown Browser, the course item below is included in your Blackboard course within the "Syllabus" page; you will need to edit the item and "Permit Users to View this Content" so students can see it: Respondus LockDown Browser Required for Tests in this Course Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser for taking tests in Blackboard. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications while completing a test. If a Blackboard test requires Respondus LockDown Browser, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. Please note that Respondus LockDown Browser should be used for taking Blackboard tests only. Respondus LockDown Browser is installed in all Hamline computers. But you must install it once in each non-Hamline computer that you plan to use for your coursework. To install the Respondus LockDown Browser, click here.
