Description: Join us for a panel discussion focused on national, state and local energy policy. What is Minnesota doing to ensure the state has safe, sustainable sources of energy now and into the future? Where will increasing energy demands drive energy production?  How will businesses adapt to a changing energy environment?

Panelist Biographies:

J. Drake Hamilton
Science Policy Director, Fresh Energy.  Her specialty is communicating global warming solutions; she gives many invited presentations every year.  Fresh Energy advocates for energy solutions that lead to healthy economies, healthy people, a healthy environment, and greater energy independence.  Hamilton serves on the board of the U.S. Climate Action Network, and helped found Congregations Caring for Creation.  In 2005, she studied global warming policy in Europe via a leadership fellowship from the European Union.  She holds degrees in geography and environmental studies from Dartmouth College and the University of Minnesota. She was formerly Assistant Professor of Geography at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she taught graduate and undergraduate courses in environmental geography and energy policy.

Senator Ellen Anderson
Chair, Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Budget Division, Minnesota Senate.  Senator Ellen Anderson was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1992 and re-elected in 1996, 2000 and 2002 as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. She represents District 66, which includes the St. Paul neighborhoods of St. Anthony Park, the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus, Midway, Como, North End, part of the East Side, and the city of Falcon Heights. Senator Anderson chairs the Senate Jobs, Energy and Community Development Committee, and is a member of the following Senate Committees: Environment, Agriculture and Economic Development Budget Division, K-12 Budget Division, and Commerce.  Senator Anderson has been a leader in the areas of sustainable energy policy, affordable housing, family friendly workplace policies and worker rights, violence prevention, progressive tax structures, and inner city revitalization.  Senator Anderson holds a B.A. from Carleton College (1982) and a J.D., cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School (1986).

Deputy Commissioner Ed Garvey
Energy and Telecommunications Division, Minnesota Department of Commerce.  He most recently served as a commissioner on the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC), which is the decision-maker in electricity, natural gas, and telephone regulatory matters. His role includes advising Department of Commerce Commissioner Glenn Wilson on energy and telecommunications policy and to represent the public interest before the MPUC. Prior to his MPUC appointment, he was the Director of the Minnesota Office of Environmental Assistance. He has served on the board of directors for the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and was Vice-Chair of NARUC's Committee on Energy Resources and the Environment. He also served on the board of directors of the National Regulatory Research Institute.
