Description: Discussions of the impact of energy consumption have turned to concerns over global warming and effects on the earth as a whole.  While the impact may be global, much of the actions being taking to address energy and sustainability are taking place at the local level. Join us for a discussion with experts from local communities on the programs that are promoting sustainability in our neighborhoods, cities and counties.

To receive credit: $25 (for Graduate School of  Management, or CEUs).

Panelist Biographies:

Sue Bast
Environmental Specialist, City of Burnsville.

Jennifer McLoughlin
Program Management Specialist, City of Woodbury.  She works on sustainability initiatives for the City of Woodbury, including programs at the city level and those that involve community outreach.  She is also the staff liaison to the Woodbury Sustainability Committee which consists of eight Woodbury citizens who are tackling issues of green building, energy conservation, and community education and awareness.  Before joining the City of Woodbury in October 2006, she worked as an environmental consultant in the Twin Cities and in Austin, Texas.  She has a master's degree in soil science from Iowa State University with an emphasis in biology and natural resource conservation.

Philipp Muessig
Sustainable Community Development Specialist, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
His background is in community development and science. Currently at the Assistance Division of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, he coordinates the Minnesota Sustainable Communities Network, promoting sustainable community development through direct assistance, funding, and publication of a monthly e-mail newsletter to over 3,100 people working in the public, non-profit and public sectors. Other work includes service with the
Minnesota Design Team. Previous positions include executive director of the Seward Neighborhood Group in Minneapolis, where he also staffed the local business association, and ombudsman for a regional whole foods grocery cooperative. An honors graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, he worked briefly as a minerals exploration geologist in North America. He is also a pollution prevention specialist with experience in toxic chemicals and industrial efficiency.

Gayle Prest
Manager for Sustainability, City of Minneapolis.  She works directly for the City Coordinator which provides a better opportunity to work throughout the various departments on environmental issues.  She has also worked for the City managing its Environmental Regulatory section and in the Public Works Department, focusing much of her time on environmental policy and communication issues.  Prior to this, she spent 13 years at Dakota County managing solid waste, recycling and household hazardous waste programs. She is a 20 year resident of Minneapolis who enjoys all the city has to offer including gardening, x-country skiing, visiting its museums and taking the bus to work.
