  • Master of Arts in Literacy Education

    Exceptional educators never stop learning.

    Literacy--the center of all learning--serves as the foundation for students' success in the classroom and as members of society. Your students' literacy needs are ever evolving. Therefore, Hamline School of Education's Master of Arts in Literacy Education program provides you with the most up-to-date curriculum, preparing you to inspire and instill in your students the literacy skills necessary to meet the challenges of learning, communicating, and problem solving in today's world.

    With a Master of Arts in Literacy Education from Hamline, you will:

    • Gain a foundation in the theoretical and practical bases of effective 21st-century literacy instruction, including critical and digital literacy.
    • Develop the expertise needed to enrich the literacy learning of diverse students across developmental levels, academic disciplines, and social and cultural contexts.
    • Become an advocate for literacy through a comprehensive understanding of literacy development, process, and instruction. 


    Time to Complete: Approximately 2 years

    Structure: On campus or online, with a cohort of learners
    in required courses (see below)

    Program Begins: Fall and spring terms

    Curriculum: 34 credits (24 required and 10 elective)

    Cost: $405 per credit, for the 2013-2014 academic year

    Fall 2014
    Begin this program with an on-campus cohort held on our Minneapolis campus.

    Spring 2015
    Our next online cohort begins spring of 2015.
