BLI Certificates Certificates prepare you to be a trusted advisor General Business Law Certificate The General Business Law Certificate combines coursework, research and writing, practical experience, and networking opportunities that provide Hamline JD students with knowledge, skills, and insight critical to the successful practice of business law. The certificate provides a strong foundation of core knowledge and skills but also allows for plenty of flexibility through electives, practical experience, extra-curricular activities, and the writing requirement. A unique feature of Hamline’s General Business Law Certificate is its ethics requirement. Ethical decision-making is essential to successful business practices, so every certificate student takes at least one business ethics course that introduces important ethical issues and perspectives. General Business Law Certificate with Intellectual Property (IP) concentration Companies' intellectual property, whether computer code, patented products, or copyrighted documents, are more crucial than ever in our digital, service-driven age. Gain the knowledge and skills needed to defend your future clients' and employers' assets with the General Business Law Certificate with IP concentration. In addition to the foundational courses required for the General Business Law Certificate, you take courses on copyright, patent, sports and trade secret law, trademark and unfair competition; and approved seminars, and selected topics; and complete an independent study to complete your IP concentration. General Business Law certificate and International Business Negotiation Certificate The General Business Law Certificate and International Business Negotiation Certificate (dual certification with the Dispute Resolution Institute) combines the strengths of Hamline Law's Business Law Institute and the nationally ranked Dispute Resolution Institute. To earn this certificate, you complete the core General Business Law Certificate requirements, 6 DRI-required credits and at least two electives from: corporate finance, international business transactions, business planning, and securities regulations. It fully prepares you for the exploding compliance industry by building on the core requirements of the Business Law Certificate with specific courses in banking and administrative law, banking compliance audits, consumer lending, and deposit regulation and bank operations. Details for all certificates For detailed information and requirements for all BLI certificates, download and review the BLI Certificate Handbook (PDF) Build expertise in foundational skills and practical applications All of our business law certificates build from a solid foundation gained through common requirements including: Coursework: Core foundational courses, a business ethics course, and electives or specialty courses, depending on which certificate you are pursuing, are required. A 3.2 GPA, not including first-year curriculum, is required for all BLI certificates. Accounting & Finance Knowledge:A basic knowledge of accounting and finance is needed, as demonstrated through Basic Accounting and Finance, offered fall term. Writing: You will complete a 25-page paper on a business law topic through coursework or participation on an approved Law Review/Journal. Practical Experience: Practical experience through a Hamline clinic or externship engage you more deeply with business law concepts and professionals as well as strengthen your skills, knowledge, and networks. Extra-Curricular Activities: At least six extra-curricular activities or events are required, which will introduce you to critical or timely business law issues and provide networking opportunities with the business and legal communities.
