Basford Presents

Hamline Professor Letitia Basford presented at the University of Minnesota’s Community-Engaged Research Conference on July 11 - 12 in Minneapolis.

In Basford’s presentation, she reflected on her role as a white, non-Muslim researcher studying the experiences of black, Muslim, immigrant adolescents at a culturally specific charter school that was created by Somali community members and specifically for Somali youth. She described the complex and sometimes troubling experiences she faced as she published this research and reflected on how she currently uses her role as a member of the academy to support youths’ perspectives, to dispel notions that their culturally specific charter school might be breaking the law, and to address other common concerns that surround the cultural and religious practices of Somali youth in U.S. K-12 schools.
