A major penalty proved to be costly for the Piper men's hockey team Saturday against Bethel. Hamline had rallied from a 3-1 deficit to make it 3-2 on a power play goal by Brandon Zurn (pictured) at 18:35 of the second period. But the Royals had a power play coming of their own -- three unfettered minutes of one because of a major penalty for boarding called against the Pipers.
And BU made the most of it, connecting for a PP tally of their own to blunt the Piper momentum. The Royals went on to a 6-2 win that dropped Hamline to 0-10-2 for the season, 0-6 in the MIAC. In addition to Zurn, Cam Stowers scored for Hamline. Matt Hemingway had 19 saves in goal.
It was the Pipers' last conference game until mid-January. But they will see a league foe in a non-conference role on Saturday, December 8 when they play St. Thomas in Mound, Minn. Game time is 7:00 p.m. HU will host Milwaukee School of Engineering December 13 at Vadnais Heights in their last pre-holiday game.
