Six weeks after they started practicing in Hutton Arena, the Pipers play their first 2012-13 game in the historic arena. And they are starting out with a toughie.
Hamline (0-3, 0-1 MIAC) face St. Thomas (3-1, 1-0) in the opening game of a conference twinbill Saturday, December 1. The opening tap is set for 1:00 p.m.
HU started the 2012-13 campaign with a pair of close setbacks in a tournament in Milwaukee. Although they scored a season high for points, they lost their MIAC lidlifter, 87-72, at St. Benedict Wednesday night. The bright spot of the night may have been Danielle Daniels, who came off the bench to score 14 and record eight rebounds. The Piper may need more scoring like that -- plus the continued efforts of shooters like Jordan Sammons (who leads the league with a 16.0 ppg mark) and Steph Pilgrim (fourth at 14.7) to subdue the Tommies, who were 31-2 last year and are currently rated No. 5 in the d3hoops.com poll. UST is 3-1 overall and opened MIAC play with a 58-47 win over Macalester at home Wednesday night.
Senior guard Kara Poirier (at left in the picture) needs just three assists to move into eighth place on the school's all-time list. She currently has 187. It's the continuation of a busy stretch for Hamline. Next week, they play three times -- Monday at St. Mary's, Wednesday at home against Augsburg and Saturday, December 8 at Bethel.
