It was a nice comeback. It just came up a little short. Hamline's men's hockey team spotted Wis-River Falls a 3-0 lead and that was too much to handle. The Pipers lost, 4-2, Saturday night at Drake Arena to fall to 0-3-1 on the season .
Hamline was outshot, 13-2, and surrendered two first goals in the first period. They gave up another one 6:28 into the second before starting back on Joe Rubbelke's power goal at 11:40. The Pipers carried the play the rest of the period but there was no more scoring. Sam Leslie finished off a nifty three-way play at 3;11 to make it 3-2 but the Falcons (4-0) responded with a shorthanded goal 28 seconds later.
Despite holding a 13-7 edge in shots for the period, HU could get no closer. Matt Hemingway had 26 save sin goal for Hamline.
The Pipers now head into MIAC play next weekend with a series against St. Mary's. They face the Cardinals in Winona Friday, Nov., 9 and have a return engagement on Nov. 10 at Vadnais Heights Sports Complex at 7:15 p.m.
