Schneekloth Saves 47 As Women Pucksters Win First

Sarah Schneekloth

Officially, it was just a non-conference win, meaning nothing in the overall MIAC standings. But don't tell that to HU women's coach Steve DeBus, goalie Sarah Schneekloth and the rest of the HU women's hockey team.

The Pipers gained their first win of the season ... and ended an eight game losing streak against St. Catherine ...  with a 2-0 win at Vadnais Heights Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.

Schneekloth stood tall all day in goal, batting away 47 shots, including 19 in the second period alone to earn her first collegiate shutout as the Pipers improved to 1-2 on the season.

Ashley Maskel scored the only goal Schneekloth would need when her point shot found the back of the net at 16:54 of the second period. The Wildcats, playing their season opener, kept up the pressure in the third period but the senior held tough in goal until Kendra Krause broke free for the clincher with 1:02 to play in the game. It was the first Piper triumph over SCU since a 4-0 decision in early 2009.

Hamline now heads to MIAC play next weekend with a series against St. Mary's. The teams will play Friday night, November 9 at Ridder Arena on the U of Minnesota campus at 7:00 p.m. They meet again on November 10 in Winona.
