Hoffman Gets Pair As Men's Hockey Rallies For 5-5 Tie

Chris Hoffman

It had the feel and intensity of a playoff game ... even though it was a non-conference game. Chris Hoffman  scored two goals as Hamline rallied from an early 2-0 deficit for a 5-5 tie with Concordia at the MIAC Hockey Showcase in Blaine Sunday. Nick Heimer recorded 30 saves in his college debut in goal in the up and down affair that saw the Pipers connect twice on the power play and take a third period lead before settling for the draw.

HU trailed 2-0 less than eight minutes into the game. Zach Johnson started the rally with the first HU goal of the season (on a feed from Ryan McElhone) at 12:57. Hoffman scored his first goal in the second period to knot the game at 2. CC went ahead only to see Nick Widing nail a power play goal to retie the game at 3 after two frames.

After CC went ahead in the thid period, Hoffman struck again to tie the game at 9:54. Less than three minutes later, Joe Rubbelke picked up a loose puck and raced in for the prettiest goal of the day at 12:21 to give Hamline its first lead.

The Pipers then killed off a two-man disadvantage but, with each team short a player, surrendered a tying goal in the final minute to force overtime.

In the extra session, Hamline fired five shots on goal but to no avail. HU is now 0-1-1 under new head coach Doc DelCastillo. They play their first home game of the season Nov. 2 against Wis-Eau Claire at Vadnais Heights Complex. They will meet Wis-River Falls at Drake Arena on Nov. 3.
