The Piper women's hockey team rallied after a staggering start but Wis-Superior had too much offense in a 6-1 decision in the season opener for both teams at Vadnais Heights complex.
Jordan Verleye scored the lone HU goal and Sarah Schneekloth knocked awat 34 shots in goal for the Pipers, who get a second crack at UWS Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The Yellowjackets started fast, scoring twice in a 12-second span in the first minute of play. The Pipers steaded after that and cut the margin to 2-1 when Verleye tipped Ashley Maskel's shot in the net at 3:03 of the middle frame. But UWS scored three more times before the end of the period and added a solo tally in the third.
