It was oh-so-close to being a very good night for the Hamline men's soccer team. They rallied twice from one goal deficits in the second half only to see Macalester scored in the second overtime to sneak off with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
After a scoreless first half, the Scots scored 36 seconds into the second stanza. The Pipers struck back quickly as Greg Northrop picked off a Mac cross and headed the ball into the net at 49:00. The homestanding Scots regained the lead only to see Tyler Tallaksen (at right) convert a pass from Sam Studer with just 2:01 remaining in regulation time to force extra play. Hamline managed three shots and a pair of corner kicks to no avail in the first extra session. In the second one, the Scots came through with a winning tally. Eric Feil recorded seven saves, including three in the extra periods, in goal for Hamline, which fell to 2-6-1 overall, 0-3 in the MIAC.
The Pipers travel to St. Olaf Wednesday afternoon (4:00 p.m.) before returning home to face St. Thomas on Saturday, September 29, at Paterson Field. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
