Football Team Starts Fast But Falls To Carleton, 21-14

Austin Duncan

It was a case of winning a battle but losing the war. Hamline's football team jumped to a 14-0 lead but couldn't hold on as Carleton rallied for a 21-14 victory at Laird Stadium. Freshman running back Austin Duncan (right) continued to impress with 84 rushing yards (including a 16 yard TD) as HU outgained the Knights, 286-265 in total yardage. But an interception and a penalty twice stopped the Pipers deep in Knight territory in the second half.

The Pipers (1-1, 0-1 MIAC) took the opening kickoff, converted three third down situations and marched 74 yards in 12 plays to grab the early lead. Duncan, a first -year running back, finished off the drive with a 16-yard dash.

The defense forced the Knights to punt and went right back to work with a 71 yard, eight play drive to make it 14-0. Kevin Ackerley, who completed nine of 16 passes for 107 yards, hooked up with Ryan Ferkinhoff for a 31-yard score and it was 14-0 just 11:17 into the game.

But the Pipers failed to score again. Carleton cut the lead to 14-13 by halftime. The Knights then scored on their first drive of the third quarter in what proved to be the final points of the afternoon.

But it wasn't easy. In the fourth quarter, HU marched deep into Knight territory only to see Ackerley get intercepted at the Knight 3. On their next drive, Hamline advanced to the Knight 27 and completed a fourth down pass to keep a drive alive. But a penalty thwarted the completion and the Knights ran out the clock to take the decision.

Patrick Page led an impressive defensive effort with 13 tackles, including 10 solos.

The Pipers will finally get to play at Klas Field next Saturday, September 22. Augsburg will be the opponent for just the second HU night game ever to be played at Klas Field. In addition to the game activities, the Hamline will honor its members of last year's men's and women's track teams that went to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Meet.

Game time will be 7:00 p.m.
