Anytime a team wins more matches than they did the year before, it is considered a good year. If you do it less than a month into the season, it is considered a remarkable feat.
The Hamline volleyball team did just that Friday, winning a pair of matches in a tournament held at St. Kate's. After outlasting Luther, 3-2, HU came right back to steamroll Bethany Lutheran, 3-0. The Pipers are now 10-1 on the season ... and have one more win than they had in the entire 2011 season.
It wasn't easy to accomplish. HU and Luther fought tooth and nail from the start. The Pipers won game 1, 25-20. Luther came back for a 25-21 decision. Hamline took Game 3 by 25-17 but the Norse returned the favor with a tense 25-23 decision in Game 4. That put the Pipers in a fifth game for the second time this season. Hamline took charge early, racing to a 9-1 lead and holding on for a 15-11 win. Sam Greeney-Hamlin led a balanced offense with 13 kills while Steph Kaup added 11 and three solo blocks. Sammie Miller dealt 27 assists and her twin sister Frankie led a season high 70 dig effort with 17. In all, four Pipers ended up with double digit dig efforts.
After a brief respite, the Pipers went to work and took out Bethany Lutheran in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, 25-19. Mackenzie Remick had 10 kills while Sammie Miller dealt 18 assists. (Becka Mozes was close behind with 16.) Frankie Miller recorded 13 digs with Lynsey Reimer adding a dozen. The Pipers hit .361 for the game and committed just one error in the second game.
The Pipers return to St. Kate's Saturday for another pair of matches -- this time against teams they saw just last weekend in their own tournament. HU meets Crown at 10:00 a.m. and Wis-Stout (who took them to five games) at 2:00 p.m.
