Eight In a Row! Pipers Sweep Their Own Tournament

VB celebration

Tired? Who gets tired when you are winning? For the second weekend in a row, the HU volleyball team swept the board at a tournament, winning all four matches in a span of 25 hours.

This time, they did it in familiar surroundings.

Three hours after defeating Crown, 3-0, the Pipers matched that score with a decision over Buena Vista at Hutton Arena to push their record-setting 2012 start to 8-0. That's also a school record for most consecutive wins and is only one shy of their entire 2011 total.

As has often been the case in this skein, the Pipers had a balanced attack. Mackenzie Remick had 11 of Hamline's 41 kills for the match against BVU. The 6-2 soph also had five solo blocks.  HU was again good defensively, committing just eight errors and finishing with a .320 attack percentage. Frankie Miller, who along with Steph Kaup, was named to the All-Tournament team, had nine kills. Sammie Miller dished out 22 assists with Becka Mozes adding 10.  The Pipers have had 343 assists in their first eight matches, easily the top number in the MIAC.

Lynsey Reimer had 20 digs with first-year player Jamie Rubbelke close behind with 16.

Earlier in the day, Hamline took Crown by storm early, committing just two errors en route to a 25-7 decision in Game 1. They cut their miscue production in half in the second game, which produced a 25-13 verdict. After jumping to a huge lead in the third game, the Pipers had to hold off a late Crown rally for a 25-12 result to end the match.

Sam Greeney-Hamlin led the balanced offense with eight kills with Frankie Miller and  Remick adding six each. Sammie Miller  had another solid game, handing the ball out. She finished with 18 assists .Reimer was her usual jack-in-the-box self, finishing with 17 digs for the match.

The Pipers now turn their sights to MIAC play. Concordia, who tied for first place last season and went on to the NCAA D-III tournament, visits Hutton Arena on September 12 for 7:00 p.m. matchup. Hamline plays in a tournament at St. Catherine's next weekend.
