It made those three weeks of practice in sweaty Hutton Arena seem worthwhile. The Hamline volleyball team followed up their Friday sweep with another two-game conquering September 1 at the Beloit Invitational. This time, HU was stretched a bit more but the result -- a pair of 3-1 wins over Marian and William Penn -- sent them home with a 4-0 mark for what is believed to be the first time in school history. (School records a little shaky on the point. game by game results only go back to 1999. HU had a 3-0 start in 2007.)

MacKenzie Remick (pictured at right) ended the four-match workout with a team high 46 kills. First year player Katie Ayres was next on the list with 36. Remick and Ayes had a dozen each as the Pipers shook off a second game loss to defeat Marian. After winning game 1 by 25-20, HU dropped their first game of the year, 21-25. But the Pipers rebounded for 25-18 and 25-12 decisions to win the match. Sammie Miller had 23 assists while Becka Mozes added 14 assist and three service aces.

HU started strong against William Penn, winning the first game 25-11 and outlasting WPU for a 27-25 win in game 2. After a 19-25 setback, the Pipers finished off their foe, 25-22, to complete the perfect weekend. Remick again led the attack with 16 kills. Miller and Mozes again went 1-2 in assists with 29 and 13 respectively.

Hamline is one of just three MIAC teams to go 4-0 on the first weekend of play.

The Pipers will host their own tournament next weekend at Hutton Arena. Hamline will face Presentation and Wis-Stout on September 7 and battle Crown and Buena Vista on September 8.
