This time, it came down to a game of simple long distance. Hamline's Kara Poirier and Steph Pilgrim had their shooting eye Saturday and it played a major role as the Pipers ended a frustrating period with a solid 67-57 win at St. Catherine's. Poirier hit five three-pointers and Pilgrim added three to help Hamline improve to 5-13 overall, 4-11 in the MIAC.
It was a much different game than the last time these teams met. On that occasion, both sides burned the nets constantly before HU emerged with a 106-100 double OT win.
This time, SCU took the early lead only to see the Pipers come back and score the final five points of the first half for a 33-26 intermission advantage. In the second half, Hamline quickly pushed the lead into double digits and kept it there to claim the victory.
For the game, HU, one of the top teams in the country in three pointers made, rang up nine treys. Pilgrim led the scorers with 16 points while Poirier ended with 15.
Jordan Sammons scored 12 points and added four steals.
The Pipers get little time to celebrate the win. They host St. Olaf Monday night at Hutton Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
