This time, Hamline made sure the shutout stayed intact. Nicole Jones kicked out 29 shots as Hamline's women's hockey team finished off its first MIAC sweep under second-year coach Steve DeBus with a solid 5-0 win over Augsburg at Augsburg Arena Saturday afternoon. Jordan Verleye led the offense with two goals while Sam Berger, Jessica Kraus and Jackie Brigl added singles as the Pipers recorded their largest margin of victory in a conference game since a 5-0 win over St. Catherine's in 2007.
As she did Friday, Berger opened the scoring, connecting for her third tally of the season 11 minutes into the game. Verleye, who also scored in Friday's 3-1 win, added a pair of netters in the second period to make it 3-0. Late in the third period, Kraus and Brigl scored 100 seconds apart to put the game out of reach. Jones took care of the rest for the Pipers, who have lost just once in their last seven games and are now 6-7-2 overall on the season, 2-5-1 in the MIAC. The Pipers came close to recording a double shutout of the Auggies. On Friday, Sarah Schneekloth lost her bid for a shutout with 1.5 seconds left in the game.
HU will look to reach the .500 mark when they host St. Benedict next Friday at Warner Coliseum. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
