It was a tall order by anybody's take. For a while Saturday, it appeared Hamline's women's bb team, playing its third game in five days, was going to finish the week on an up note. But a veteran St. Benedict's team was having none of it in the second half and held off a pair of Piper surges for a 71-57 decision. Hu saw its two-game winning streak end. They are now 4-7 overall, 3-5 in the MIAC.
The defenses had the better of it in the first half. HU led by as many as seven points but the Blazers rattled off the final eight points of the half for a 22-21 lead. St. Ben's kept it up at the start of the second session, pushing the lead to 11 before Hamline turned the tables. Jordan Sammons, who led all scored with 22 points hit three free throws to get HU within five points at 46-41 with 10:14 left. Later, Sammons nailed a jumper with 7:48 to make it 49-45. But the Blazers rattled off seven points in a row to take charge of the game for good.
Rebounding woes proved to be the culprit. HU was beaten on the boards, 41-28 and garnered just three offensive rebounds all day.
In addition to Sammons' second-best output of the season, Je'Naya Brown scored 14 points.
Hamline now gets some needed rest and gets to stay home next week, hosting Concordia Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. Bethel visits Hutton Arena next Saturday. Please note that starting game time has been moved up to 1:00 p.m.
