Although his team didn't win, Hamline swimming coach Frank Vaccaro still had plenty of reason to be pleased with his team's efforts in today's Hamline Invite. The men finished second and the women came in fourth. But it was the efforts by the newer members on both sides that stood out.
The all-freshman contingent of Mackenzie Hayes, Laura Kaiser, Michelle Vargason and Rachel Ronnander had a pair of second place finishes in the 200 yard Medley and Freestyle relays. Ronnander had a fifth place finish in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 Free. Kaiser was fourth in the 100 Butterfly. Vargason had a fifth in the 100 Breaststroke and Hayes was sixth in the 100 yard Backstroke. Another freshman, Ingrid Haugan, was third in the 1-meter Diving.
On the men's side, the team of Ben Smidt, Nick Herrera, Isak Vartti and Corbin Conliffe came in the second in the 100 yard Freestyle Relay. Vartti had a great time of 53.06 in finishing fourth in the 100 free and a solid fourth as well n the 100 yard Butterfly. Herrera came in fifth in the 50 Free. "All in all, we did very well today," Vaccaro said.
