Women's Soccer Finish Over .500 For First Time Ever In MIAC Play

It was a memorable way to go out ... and look ahead. Hamline's women's soccer team completed its most successful season ever with a 2-0 win over St. Catherine's this afternoon at Paterson Field. Liz Stock (Sr., Savage, Minn.)  stopped seven first half shots for her third shutout of the year. Aileen Scheibner (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) scored a team high 12th goal of the season in the first half and Alyssa Koulentis (So., Gresham, Ore.) scored her first of the year late in the game to provide the needed offense.

As a result, the Pipers hit the 10-win plateau for just the second time in school history, ending the season at 10-5-3. More importantly, though, they were 5-4-2 in the MIAC, their first winning conference slate in the two-plus decades the sport has been played here. The 2007 Pipers -- coach Ted Zingman's first team -- also won 10 games but finished at 4-7 in the MIAC.

The first half was a wide open affair with each goalie forced to come up with seven saves. Scheibner finished a nifty three-way passing play from Koulentis and Brienne Garside (So., Broomfield, Colo.) 10:21 into the game to net the only shot that wasn't stopped. Stock, who along with senior Courtney McMoore (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) was at her best in a late flurry that saw her make a pair of saves seconds apart from close range.

In the second half, both team tightened up considerably. Hamline held the Wildcats to just two shot attempts, neither of which were on goal. With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Scheibner found Koulentis at the right side of the net for the clincher. It was the final act of a terrific first year for Scheibner, who ends the season with 12 goals and five assists.

For her part, Stock finished with an 0.87 GAA in 16 games. In addition to the three solo shutouts, she shared in three other blankings.

With just two seniors graduating, the future looks bright indeed for the Piper women soccer program. On this sunny Saturday, the present looks pretty nice as well.
