Vartti, Smidt Have Big Days At Augsburg Penthathlon

If this has been Broadway, you might have said they had a boffo opening performance. Hamline swimmers Isak Vartti (So., Hugo, Minn.)  and Ben Smidt (Fy., Apple Valley, Minn.) finished second and third respectively in the men's portion of the Augsburg Pentathlon, the first event of the 2011-12 swimming season. Vartti won the Butterfly and IM and finished second in the Backstroke and Freestyle.  Smidt was second in the IM, third in the Butterfly (less than a second behind Vartti) and finished  just three seconds behind Vartti in the Backstroke.

Vartti finished the day in second place with 190 points, three out of first place. Smidt was right behind him with 185 points. As a team, the men lost out to Simpson, 977-858.

Michelle Vargason (Fy., Duluth, Minn.) was the top women's individual finisher, ending up 7th in a field of 41 with 143 points. Laura Kaiser (Fy., Shoreview, Minn.) was ninth with 138. Kaiser had the best individual effort, a 5th place finish in the Butterfly. Vargason was 6th in the Breaststroke and 7th in the IM. As a team, Hamline placed second in a four team field. St. Catherine, where the meet was held was first, followed by the Pipers, Augsburg and Simpson.
