It was a run for the ages Saturday. Devin Monson (Sr., Thompson, N.D.) became the first Hamline runner (and one of the very MIAC types) to win the Division III portion of the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday at the U of Minnesota golf course. On Monday, the MIAC honored him as its Men's Cross Country Athlete Of the Week.
Monson did more than just win this race. He swamped the field, running the 8K course in a time of 25:33.9, nearly 14 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in the 331-man field. He also clipped more than a minute off his time from last year, when he finished in 9th place. Monson's solid effort helped his team to a 4th place finish over along the 33 teams competing. He'll get some time to rest on his laurels. The harriers don't return to action until October 8 when they compete at the St. Catherine's Invite.
After the race, Devin talked to Flotrack. Click here for the interview.
For the third week in a row, the Piper men remained the top ranked team in the USTFCCA Coaches poll of Division III teams released September 27. Four other MIAC schools -- St. Olaf, St. John's, St. Thomas and Carleton -- are also in the Top Ten.
