Pipers open MIAC play with split at Bethel

The Hamline University softball team opened play on the 2011 MIAC season with a high-scoring split at Bethel University, winning the first game 10-2 before dropping the second game 11-8.

With the split, Hamline opens MIAC play with a 1-1 record and is now 7-7 overall. Bethany Hine led the Pipers in the two games, going 4-for-7 at the plate with four RBIs. Erin Farley added a trio of RBIs, as well.

The host Royals scored two runs in the opening inning, but Hamline quickly took over the scoreboard in the next two frames to take a 9-2 lead after three innings of play.

In the second, Lauren Clouston drew a lead-off walk and scored the first run of the game as Jackie Brigl. Brigl scored on a fielder's choice before Erin Farley drove in a pair of runs to tally four in the inning on four Piper hits.

In the following inning, Hamline took advantage of a pair of Bethel errors, as well as three hits, to more than double their run total.

Lauren Turitto drew the walk to put the first baserunner on in the inning and scored on a Kristi Gravem single.

Then a two-RBI single from Bethany Hine drove in Gravem and Brigl for the 7-2 Hamline lead. Farley picked up another RBI as she reached on an error while Heidi Larsen tallied the final RBI of the inning with a single to drive in the ninth Piper run of the game.

The Pipers added another run on a trio of hits, including an RBI single from Gravem, in the fourth.

Kelsey Tacheny gave up four hits as she threw a complete game to pick up the win for Hamline.

In the second game, Bethel took a 3-2 lead after the opening pair of innings. Hamline tied up the game in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single from Turitto. But the Royals tallied seven runs in the fourth on eight hits, including a three-run homerun, to jump out to a 10-3 lead.

In the fifth, Hine led off with a triple and scored on an error to make the score 10-4. Clouston then drove in a second run with a double, as Hamline had three hits and Bethel recorded an error in the inning.

The sixth inning saw the Pipers cut the deficit to a pair of runs as they used four hits and a Bethel error to score three runs. Hine drove in two of the runs with a single while Laura Randall picked up an RBI, also with a single.

The Royals added one more run to the board in the bottom of the inning for the 11-8 win.

Tacheny entered the game in the fourth for Hamline, taking the loss.
