Pipers sweep doubles matches in first MIAC win

Senior co-captains Kelly Gust (East Grand Forks, N.D.) and Liz Gunderson (New Prague, Minn.) paired up at first doubles for the 8-4 victory.

Kelsey Eatherton (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Anna Yarbrough (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn.) won at second doubles, 8-6. The third doubles team of Sara Mitambo (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kristen Kiemele (So., Eagan, Minn.) won, 8-5.

Gunderson, Eatherton and Kiemele went on to win their singles matches to sweep their points for the day. Gunderson was leading 5-2 at second singles before winning by default. Eatherton battled back after losing the first set to win her third singles match in a super-breaker, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.

The final Piper point came from Kiemele's convincing win at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-0.

Yarbrough also battled back from a first set loss to send her fourth singles match to a super-breaker, but fell 4-6, 6-1, 1-10.

The Pipers move to 2-11, 1-6 MIAC on the season. They will next play at Gustavus at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 19.
