2010 is the bicentenary of Frederic Chopin's birth. Musicians around the world are celebrating this icon of the piano in a variety of ways.  Jeffrey Siegel will take it one step further in his commentaries and performances of Chopin's music, and the music of his contemporaries.

Each concert-with-commentary combines Mr. Siegel's insightful comments and musical examples with a masterful piano recital. To enrich the "conversation," the pianist encourages an informal question-and-answer time with the audience at the conclusion of each program.

All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.  Our next concert is:

November 24, 2009: CHOPIN THE STORYTELLER

Epic poems and short stories in tone. What may have inspired Chopin's musical narratives? How does a composer "tell" stories without words? The program includes Ballades of Chopin, Novelettes of Robert Schumann (whose 200th birthday is also celebrated this season), and music by Johannes Brahms.

March 9, 2010: CHOPIN AND THE FUTURE

Chopin is not only one of the most popular composers of all time, but one of the most influential as well.  This program includes some of his works that both delight the ear and point to the future - Etudes and Nocturnes - as well as music by Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Scriabin, and Szymanowski.

October 6, 2009: CHOPIN AND HIS HEROES: BACH AND MOZART

Preludes of Chopin and Bach start this journey, followed by Chopin's stupendous variations on the beloved melody La cì darem la mano from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, and Chopin's cosmic Sonata No. 2, which includes the most famous Funeral March ever written.
