Antivirus Software

"Antivirus software is a computer program that detects, prevents, and takes action to disarm or remove malicious software programs, such as viruses and worms. You can help protect your computer against viruses by using antivirus software.... Computer viruses are software programs that are deliberately designed to interfere with computer operation, record, corrupt, or delete data, or spread themselves to other computers and throughout the Internet.... To help prevent the most current viruses, you must update your antivirus software regularly. You can set up most types of antivirus software to update automatically" (Microsoft Corporation).

Hamline provides antivirus software (Sofos Antivirus) for students. FREE download of the Sofos antivirus software is available in the Piperline Secure Area.

Computer Labs on Campus

Over 150 microcomputers are housed in public computer labs across the campus in Drew Science, Robbins Science, Law School Library, Sorin Hall, and Bush Library. These labs offer both Macintosh and Windows-based computers, laser printers, flatbed scanners, A/V-equipped computers, and electric keyboards connected to MIDI-equipped computers. A wide range of software is also available, including word processing, advanced graphics, desktop publishing, statistical analysis, and specialized math and science programs.

The main computer lab is located in the lower level of Bush Library, and is staffed by lab consultants (ITS HelpDesk). This computer lab is open whenever Bush Library is open. (Bush Library Hours)

24-Hour Computer Lab: The new computer lab in the Sorin Residence Hall is open 24-hour and available to all Hamline students.

Free Downloads, Plug-ins & Players

You may need to use special software applications to access course content. Links to free downloads such as Adobe Acrobat Reader and Microsoft Windows Media Player are available in the Free Downloads, Plug-ins & Players page.

NetStorage
NetStorage is a web-based file storage system available to students at Hamline University. Each student is assigned a 200 MB "private" space in the NetStorage server. NetStorage allows users secure file access from any Internet location – with nothing to download or install on the user’s workstation.

NetStorage is a system where you can save and retrieve material from the network in addition to using disks, USB Flash storage, etc. With NetStorage, you can securely access files from any Internet-enabled machine. You can copy, move, rename, delete, read, and write files between a local workstation and the Hamline storage network. There is no need to e-mail or copy data from one machine to another. NetStorage files are permanently stored, backed up and available to you through the Hamline network. This makes it a more suitable option for backing up documents.

You need to log in using your Hamline e-mail account (NetMail or GroupWise) username    and password.

Printing/Copying Equipment on Campus (Billing Code)
Printing/copying equipment is available in the computer labs and across campus for students to use. Hamline University uses a billing code based printing/copying solution for all students. All of Hamline University’s computer labs and public printer/copiers are under this billing code system. This system simply requires a unique billing code that is associated with each student's Hamline ID. The Printing/Copying Billing Code is a unique number that is assigned only to you. It is NOT the same as the Piperline PIN.

Your Printing/Copying Billing Code is encoded on the magnetic stripe on the back of your Hamline ID card. (More Information on the Hamline ID Card)

You can also look up your Printing/Copying Billing Code in the Piperline Secure Area.
