 Working with group pages

Group Pages provide an environment where assigned groups of students can communicate and work together on course projects. The course instructor sets up the Group Pages and assigns class members to each one.

The group page allows a group of students to perform activities in isolation from the rest of the class.  From a group page, users are able to send e-mail to other members, exchange files, enter discussion forums, and enter a virtual classroom discussion.

NOTE: Using the Group Pages feature, instructors are able to create personal pages for each of the students in a class. Students may be required to submit responses to individual assignments (a journal, for example) using a Group Page.

To access a Group Page:

•Click on the Groups button in the course web site’s button bar, OR

•click on the Communication button in the course web site’s button bar and then click on the Group Pages hyperlink.

NOTE: You will see all of the groups that exist for the course, with the name of the group as a link, and a description of the group.

•Click on the name of the Group (hyperlink) to which you belong.

NOTE: Only groups to which you belong will be shown as hyperlinks.

•When you enter the group page, the tools available to the group will be listed at the top of the screen. The names of the members and their e-mail addresses will appear at the bottom of the screen.

Four functions may be available in the Group Pages area:

Group Discussion Board-Users can enter asynchronous discussions within various Group Forums. Group Forums are set up by the instructor. For more information on how to post and read messages on the Discussion Board, refer to the “Directions for Using Blackboard” document

Group Collaboration -Users can meet other group members (including the instructors) for real-time (synchronous) discussions.

File Exchange-Users can exchange files with other members of the group.

NOTE: The File Exchange function is similar to the Digital Dropbox feature available to the entire class.

Send E-mail-Users can send e-mail to one or all members of the group.

NOTE: The Group Send E-mail  function is similar to the Send E-mail function available to the entire class.

More detailed information about Group Pages is available online at  http://behind.blackboard.com/docs/r6/6_1/student/bbls_r6_1_student.
