I already own a computer, but it doesn't contain a network card. Where should I purchase a network card? Is it something I can install myself?
Most reputable computer stores sell enterprise-grade network cards, such as those from Intel or 3Com. Students can purchase a network card from their local computer store, or from the suppliers the University purchases its computers from. When purchasing a network card, here are a couple of things to keep in mind. While it is not particularly difficult to install a network card, we urge you to have it done by a professional rather than installing it yourself. Be aware performing any kind of installation or repair inside the CPU casing without adequate static protection can cause serious damage to your computer, and will almost certainly void your computer's warranty.
When purchasing a network card, please purchase an enterprise-grade network card from a reputable vendor such as 3Com or Intel. We have found that home-grade network cards, such as those sold by most chain superstores, fail more frequently than the more expensive enterprise-grade cards, and are much more likely to have random connection problems.

What network cards do you support?
Hamline University's Information Technology Services (ITS) supports any Novell Netware-certified Ethernet card. When purchasing a network card, look for Novell's "Yes, Tested and Approved" logo on the box or card (see http://developer.novell.com/solutions/yes.htm).

I haven't purchased a computer yet. Where should I purchase it?
The University has agreements that allows student to purchase computers from the same vendors the University uses. For additional information, please see vendor links…
The Twin Cities boast a large number of computer vendors, and the University does not endorse any particular vendor. When purchasing a computer, student should bear in mind that not all computers are well suited for connecting to an enterprise network such as the University's. Many of the computers sold at chain superstores are better suited for home-use, rather than enterprise use. Students are encouraged to purchase business grade computer (such as Dell's Optiplex line or Compaq's Deskpro line) rather than a home grade computer (such Dell's Dimension line or Compaq's Presario line).

Will ITS fix my computer if it breaks? Should I have insurance on my computer?
No. ITS' hardware technicians will only repair computer equipment purchased and owned by the University. Students are responsible for getting their own computers repaired. It is expected that users will strive to become proficient in the use and routine maintenance of their own computers and peripherals.
The University assumes no responsibility for theft or damage to computer equipment or peripherals belonging to students, and does not provide insurance for computers. Students are encouraged to consult with their insurance carriers to insure their computer equipment is appropriately covered.

Do I need to purchase my own application software or is it provided?
Students are encouraged to purchase a capable word processing suite (such as Microsoft Office) as well as a quality virus protection and firewall suite (i.e., Norton Internet Security or McAfee Internet Security Suite). Specialized applications required by courses are available in computer labs for student use.
Hamline University uses Microsoft Office as its word processing suite and we suggest you do the same to guarantee compatibility with Hamline faculty and staff. If you intend to bring you computer on campus and connect to our network your system will need to be running some form of virus protection and personal firewall software.
NB. If you are a CLA Undergraduate student, Law student, or Graduate student (living on campus), you can obtain a copy of Symantec Client Security Suite 2.0, which is the corporate version of the Norton Internet Security Suite, free of charge by visiting the Piperline Software Download page.
