WHAT IS THE UBMS PROGRAM?

Upward Bound Math & Science is a federally-funded residential summer program for students who have the potential, but perhaps not the financial means, to complete college and enter a career in math of the sciences.  You will learn in classes, fieldtrips, through the use of digital cameras and GPS units, as well as through projects you complete over the summer. Topics studied include math, physics, geology, computers, writing, English and another language.  We will teach you valuable study skills and provide academic advising to help you create and follow a path to success.

WHERE IS THE UBMS PROGRAM?

Students will live and go to classes at Hamline University, located in Saint Paul, MN.  The campus is surrounded by urban Saint Paul and is only minutes to the attractions of the cities including shopping centers, hospitals, scientific-research institutions, businesses, science labs, museums, theatres and other cultural offerings.

Students will also travel around Minnesota on educational and fun fieldtrips.  Trips include touring college campuses, canoeing the Root River, visiting the Soudan mine, fossil-hunting in Lilydale, exploring Taylor’s Falls, and conducting research on the St. Croix River.

WHY IS THE UBMS PROGRAM IMPORTANT?

This program will help you clarify your goals for life and help you learn how to achieve them.  You may receive high school credit for your work; in any case you will be ahead in your class when you return to school.  You will also have a head start with college and financial aid application processes.  Once you complete the program, UBMS staff will continue to be a resource to you as you complete high school and apply to colleges.

Living on campus will help you understand the college experience, provide you with an opportunity to grow and to learn more about yourself and develop new friendships with interesting  people.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Any program similar to UBMS would cost thousands of dollars ... But this program is completely FREE!!!  In fact, each student may earn $30 in spending money every two weeks simply by attending classes and doing their best.

We will cover ALL costs of the UBMS program including tuition and living expenses.  Every student will also earn a TI-86 calculator ($100 value) and a UBMS backpack.
