Accessibility on Campus
It is Hamline University policy to ensure that no student with a disability is denied access to a course in which he or she is enrolled because the classroom is not accessible. Disability services is available to assist with the relocation of classes or programs that are held in locations that are physically inaccessible. Physical barriers can be reported to disability services by calling Elise Meger at 651-523-2740.

Faculty Notification Letters
Students requesting academic accommodations must inform their professors by providing Faculty Notification Letters from DS. These letters state that the student is registered with DS and provide guidance for implementing accommodations. Students may pick up these letters from DS within one week of the original request. Early notification and active communication with instructors are the best ways to ensure that a student's accommodation needs are met. Students do not have to discuss the nature of their disability with the instructor, but should be prepared to discuss how the instructor can assist with disability-related issues throughout the course. Instructors have two weeks to make necessary arrangements for accommodations. Any student who has followed proper procedures, but is concerned that his/her request will not be met, should contact DS immediately.
Interpreting and Captioning Services
Hamline University will arrange and incur the cost of interpreter services for classes, related academic requirements, and non-academic, out-of-class activities sponsored by the University for any registered Hamline student. Students requesting interpreter or captioning services will meet with a DS staff member to discuss his or her needs. Students are asked to schedule their classes in such a way as to achieve maximum benefit from minimum interpreter time. Students are urged to finalize their schedules far in advance of the first class day so interpreters can be scheduled.
Auxiliary Aids
DS will provide auxiliary aids for students to afford access to educational programs and university services. Examples include adaptive equipment in an academic department, print materials in alternate formats, and FM listening devices.
Personal Aids and Equipment
Students are responsible for aids or assistance of a personal nature such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, computers to be used at home, or attendants for services of a personal nature including assistance with eating, bathing or dressing.
Print Materials in Alternate Formats
DS provides textbook conversion to qualifying students. Textbook conversion can be a lengthy process and students are advised to submit requests immediately after registering for class. Upon receiving textbook information from students, DS will request the electronic text from the publisher. Publishers require 15 business days' notice for e-text requests. Upon receiving the electronic texts, DS must often edit and reformat the material. Once materials are obtained as an electronic file, it can be converted to Braille, audio recordings, enlarged print, and saved to a CD for use with screen reading software provided by DS.
Testing Accommodations
DS provides a reduced-distraction room for students who qualify for extended time for exams. Students must schedule a testing time at least one week in advance. Testing should occur at the same time that the rest of the class is testing. Students must complete the top portion of the Testing Accommodations form and have the rest filled out by his/her professor.
Parking Policies
First year students requesting a car on campus for disability reasons should go here and fill out the exemption form. Students should submit this form to the Office of Safety and Security for review. Upon review, the student will be contacted with a decision. If the student is granted the ability to have a car on campus, s/he must purchase a parking permit from the Office of Safety and Security.
All other students at Hamline University requesting a car on campus for disability reasons should contact a staff member from Disability Services to fill out a Parking Lottery Exemption Form. Once this form has been signed by the student and a DS staff member, the student should submit the form to the Office of Safety and Security.
Please note that the Parking Lottery Exemption form does not make a student exempt from paying the cost of the parking permit. Students with temporary disabilities (such as a broken leg), requesting a car on campus for a period of up to 10 days, should contact a staff member from Disability Services to obtain a temporary parking permit. First year students are eligible to receive temporary parking permits as well. Disability Services does not provide handicap parking permits. These permits are issued by the State of Minnesota. Students who wish to request a handicap parking permit from the State of Minnesota should go here to apply.
