CAMPUS SECURITY ALERT– September 28, 2007
Critical/Major Incident
Hamline University Safety and Security Services would like to inform the Hamline community about the robbery of a female Hamline resident student that occurred about six blocks from campus on Friday, September 28, 2007 about 10:30 p.m.
The student was walking in the area of Hamline Ave. and Thomas Ave. talking on her cell phone when she was approached by a white male who was driving a motorcycle. The suspect struck her in the face, knocked her to the ground, and took her cell phone. The student reported the incident to Hamline's Safety and Security Office, and the incident is now under investigation by the Saint Paul Police Department.
The suspect description provided to the police by the victim: White male, young, bald, with a muscular build, driving a motorcycle.

CAMPUS SAFETY ALERT – SEPTEMBER 8, 2007
Hamline University Safety and Security Services would like to inform the Hamline Community about a robbery that occurred near the campus Saturday, September 8, 2007 at approximately 11:30 pm.
Three Hamline female students were walking east on Taylor Avenue approaching Albert Street when two males came up behind them and said, "Habla Espanol." The first suspect, a Hispanic male, then pointed a silver and white handgun at one of the victims and said, "Give me your purse." The second suspect, a black male, said the same to a second victim. When the third student attempted to use her phone to call police, one of the suspects took it away from her. The suspects fled west on Taylor Avenue. The students immediately called the Saint Paul police, and a report was made. A police canine unit tracked the suspects to the corner of Albert Street and Englewood Avenue.
This incident is now under investigation by Saint Paul police. In response to the incident, Hamline University has requested that St. Paul police increase patrols throughout the university neighborhood.SUSPECT DESCRIPTIONS:
(Information regarding suspect descriptions came from the report that victims gave to the Saint Paul Police Department).
Suspect #1 is a Hispanic male, early 20’s, 5'10" - 5'11", heavy build, approximately 275 – 300 lbs, with a goatee. He was wearing a white hooded, zip-up sweatshirt with the hood up. On the left breast or shoulder of the sweatshirt was an "R". He was wearing Roca wear brand blue jeans and white Addidas tennis shoes. The hair visible under the hood was black and appeared to be cut short.
Suspect #2 is a black male, early 20’s, 5’7 " to 5’8", average build, approximately 150 lbs, goatee, black hair in cornrows, with a missing or chipped front tooth. He was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt with a gold zipper and gold design diamond pattern throughout. On the left shoulder of the sweatshirt there is a red and green emblem. He was wearing dark colored denim jeans and white Addidas tennis shoes.

Hamline University Safety and Security Services would like to inform the Hamline Community about a purse snatch that occurred near on campus May 1, 2006 at approximately 8:50 PM.
A Nacel faculty member was on the sidewalk on the south side of Hewitt between Giddens Learning Center and the Bush Library when the incident happened. Two male suspects crossed Hewitt Avenue and approached her. One of the suspects grabbed her handbag from her shoulder and both suspects then ran east on Hewitt, then north on Simpson and then east on Taylor. The victim was not injured and no words were exchanged. The police responded and made a report. An immediate search of the area was conducted by police and security officers but the suspects were not found. Some of the victim’s loss was recovered in the search.

A Hamline student was just off campus, in the alley behind Hewitt Avenue, Holton to Pascal when the incident occurred. As the student walked on Holton approaching the east end of the alley he observed the suspect walking toward him from the Hewitt & Holton intersection. The suspect was about 50 yards away when he called to the victim by saying “Excuse me sir, can I ask you a question?” The victim kept walking and proceeded west down the alley. He heard the suspect run up behind him and then the suspect said, “Don’t look. I have a knife in my pocket. Do you have a wallet?” The victim said he did not. The suspect then said, “What do you have in the bag?” The victim did not answer. At this time, the victim reported that another person started walking down the alley toward them and the suspect fled the scene east bound back down the alley. The victim did not report seeing the knife or any other weapon. He said that he continued to walk quickly throughout the incident.
SUSPECT DESCRIPTION: African-American male, 20-30 years, 5'5" - 5'8", thin build, clean shaven, ear length dread locks. He was wearing a dark hunter green or black windbreaker style jacket, baggy dark blue jeans and a black Yankees baseball cap with a white "NY" logo.

Safety and Security Services would like to inform the Hamline Community about an incident that occurred on April 26, 2006, at approximately 10 pm. A Hamline Student was on or near Englewood Avenue in the area of Osborn Hall when he was approached by two unknown African American males. The victim was assaulted and robbed. One of the suspects was armed with a knife or sharp instrument. The suspects were wearing hooded sweatshirts. No additional description is available at this time. More information will be provided if details become available. St. Paul Police responded and are investigating.
This is the second incident that has occurred on Englewood Avenue bordering the campus. The first robbery occurred on January 20, 2006 at 10:30 pm. A security alert was issued at that time.

Security Services would like to inform the Hamline Community about a suspicious person on campus who was involved in indecent conduct. Two separate incidents occurred by the Heights on Friday, February 24,
The first Incident occurred in the Hamline University Safety and Security Services would like to inform the Hamline Community about a suspicious person on campus who was involvved in indecent conduct. Two separate incidents occurred by the Heights on Friday, February 24, 2006.
The first incident occurred in the Heights parking lot by Peterson Hall at approx. 7:15 p.m. The second incident involved the indecent conduct and occurred by Osborn Hall at approx. 8:30 p.m. Suspect was observed by students outside the lounge window masturbating. He ran off when observed.
The suspect description is as follows:
Race: White male
Age: 40’s
Height: Approx. 5’9” – 5’11”
Weight: 200 – 230 pounds
Hair: Short, brown
Build: chubby
Clothing: In first incident: Black and red ski jacket, a diagram of a diamond on the back, grey sweatpants, black Nike tennis shoes, dark blue/white wool hat with pom poms on top. 2nd Incident: black jacket with red stripes on the shoulder.
Other: Wearing prescription eyeglasses.
A witness to the earlier incident, believes this person is possibly RICHARD CHARLES STEVENS, DOB: 1/25/65. An alert involving Stevens was put out by Safety and Security on October 28th, 2005. This alert can be found on the Safety and Security Web site. Mr. Stevens has a previous conviction for felony stalking.
If anyone encounters suspicious activity, indecent conduct or any criminal behavior, you should call the St. Paul Police Department, then Safety and Security at x2100.

Safety & Security would like to inform the Hamline community about several recent thefts.
There was a burglary in Peterson Residence Hall, where entry was made by forcing open a ground floor window. An unlocked room was entered and a laptop was taken. There is no suspect description in this crime.
A second theft occurred in the Drew Science building. An unlocked, unattended computer lab was entered and a DVD drive was removed from a computer. No suspect information.
While classes were in session, there was also a burglary of Robbins Science Center faculty office and storage area in which locked doors were pried open. Suspect was seen walking with a limp, possibly concealing a crowbar in his pant leg. He was described as a Caucasian male with sandy blonde hair, approximately 5’6” – 5’11”, 180 – 190 pounds, 18-20 years old, wearing a short, dark colored down winter jacket and carrying a pale green back pack. He was described as overweight with a “puffy face”. A second suspect was observed and was described as a Caucasian male, 5’6” – 5’11”, with an average build and dark colored hair.
If you see someone engaged in suspicious activities, or who does not appear to belong, please call Safety and Security at x-2100 from any campus phone. If you see a crime in progress, please contact the Saint Paul Police Office at 911 (dial 9 first if using a campus phone to get an outside line). Then call Safety and Security.
Do you know it only takes 8 seconds for a thief to enter your room or office and leave with your valuables? More than 90% of room and office thefts occur when occupants are gone for only a few minutes. The following tips will help you from becoming a victim:
- Be alert to any people in your building or residence hall who appear suspicious or do not belong. If in doubt, notify security.
- Always lock your room door, office door and desk drawers when you leave, even if only for a few minutes.
- Even when the door is locked, do not leave your purse, laptops, wallets, cash or other valuables in plain sight or unattended in offices, library or vehicles.
- Do not carry your social security card or birth certificate copy in your wallet or purse.
- Remember to obtain suspect information, to include race, age, height,
- weight, hair, clothing or other identifiable features.
- Do not prop outside doors
- Do not let people you don’t know follow you into your residence or through secured doors.
- Keep windows closed and locked.

Campus Safety Alert - October 28, 2005
Warning
On Wednesday night, October 26th, 2005, RICHARD CHARLES STEVENS, DOB: 1/25/65, 40 Years, white male, 5"*' to 5"9", 270 pounds, was observed at the Hamline/Augsburg Woman's Volleyball game.
STEVENS has a previous conviction for felony stalking. In June 2001 he pled guilty to stalking a 17 year old Henry Sibley female gymnast. In addition, between December 2000 and February 2001, he was seen at several Henry Sibley girls' gymnastic events photographing female gymnasts. As a result of the stalking convictins, he was ssentenced to 12 months in the Dakita County Jail and 5 years probation, prohibintin him from attending any female atheletic events. On February 18, 2002, he was arrested for violation of his probation after he was deeen at a Breack High School girls' gymnastcis meet. He returned to prison, served the remaineder of his sentence and wa sdischarged May 3, 2005. He is no longer on probation or parole.
Details of the incident at Hamline University on October 26, 2005:
An Augsburg parent attending the volleyball game recongnized STEVENS. The parent notified Hamline staff, STEVENS was confronted and he left campus. He reportedly was carrying a large duffle type bag that contained camera equipment.
STEVENS is not welcome on the Hamline University Campus. If he is seen, call the Office of Safety and Security immediately. He will be trespassed and ordered to leave. If he refuses to leave, returns or otherwise creates a disturbance, St. Paul Police will be called. |

CARTER has numerous felony convictions for property crimes as well as other violent crimes. He currently is awaiting sentencing on a Theft by Swindle case. He has a chemical dependency as well as a possible mental health illness. DO NOT approach him, call Safety and Security.
Details of incident at Hamline University on November 22, 2005:
At approx. 2 p.m. & 5:30 p.m., CARTER approached staff in campus buildings asking for money. He stated he lived in the Hewitt House.
CARTER reappeared around 5:30 p.m. and this time asked for money for a motel for his wife and son to stay at since they couldn’t stay at Hewitt House with him.
CARTER was wearing a dark tan or beige jacket, thigh length with green lining. Possibly wearing black tennis shoes.
It was verified that CARTER does not live at Hewitt House. Carter is known as a con man and will approach church setting for money.
CARTER is not welcome on the Hamline University Campus. If he is seen, do not approach, but call the Office of Safety and Security immediately at x2100. He will be trespassed and ordered to leave. If he returns or otherwise creates

On Wednesday night, October 26th, RICHARD CHARLES STEVENS, DOB 1/25/65, 40 Years, White Male, 5’8” to 5’9”, 270 lbs, was observed at the Hamline / Augsburg woman’s volleyball match.
STEVENS has a previous conviction for felony stalking. In June 2001 he pled guilty to stalking a 17 year old Henry Sibley female gymnast. As a result of the stalking conviction, he was sentenced to 12 months in the Dakota County Jail and 5 years probation, prohibiting him from attending any female athletic events. Safety Important Incident: and Security would like to inform the Hamline community about information received from MACALESTER College’s Security Office concerning a suspicious person. This individual has engaged women in polite conversations and on occasion these conversations have turned to more sexually explicit language.
We ask that if you are approached by this individual or observe him on campus, that you contact Safety and Security at X2100 or the St. Paul Police at 911. Try to obtain an accurate description of this person.
He is described as:
Name: Larry Pinkney
Age: 40 – 50
Race: African American
Height: 5 foot 11 inches
Weight: 180 pounds
Build: Medium
Clothing: Nicely dressed, maybe a leather jacket
Other: Animated hand gestures while talking
Please be cautious and watch out for your personal safety. When outside, try to walk in numbers and be aware of your surroundings and the people in them. Do not admit strangers or other unknown persons into your residence or office area.

CAMPUS SAFTEY ALERT Update: October 18, 2005
To: Hamline University Community
Subject: LARRY PICKNEY UPDATE
The following information was received from Macalester College concerning updated information on Larry Pickney.
The Ramsey County Attorneys Office declined prosecution as “unlikely to prevail at trial”. The case has also been forwarded to the St. Paul City Attorney’s Office for review, but it is not expected a charge will be filed.
Pickney has a probation hearing and the judge added an additional order that Pickney not be closer than 1,500 feet to any college in the state. If he does violate this or any other conditions of his probation he may be sent back to jail.
If you see Larry Pickney on campus or within 1,500 feet of campus, immediately call security at x2100 and the St. Paul Police at 911.
