Hamline University

Overview of learning outcomes articulation and assessment work, Hamline university, 2007-08

THE CHARGE, YEAR ONE:  In this first year of implementation, the charge is for each unit (school, program, or department) to develop or revise student learning outcomes specific to that unit and to align and connect those with the university learning outcomes, as appropriate.

The strategic plan for 2007-2012 calls for us to “implement learning outcomes that ensure a Hamline graduate will be able to:

  • serve, collaborate, and lead in a community
  • solve problems in innovative, integrative, analytical, and ethical ways
  • work and create understanding across cultural differences locally, nationally, and internationally
  • use information and technology competently and responsibly
  • communicate effectively in writing and in speaking
  • apply the theories and methods of a field of expertise
  • engage independently and reflectively in lifelong learning” (Initiative 2.2.A).

As individual units develop or revise their own, distinct learning outcomes, they will determine how their students will achieve each university learning outcome in ways relevant to their academic and professional communities.  Each program or department within a unit is not necessarily responsible for every university learning outcome, but each school needs to ensure that every student has learning opportunities to achieve all of the university-level outcomes.

By May 15, 2008, each academic unit and student affairs will submit to the Standing Committee on Learning Outcomes Assessment statements of program learning outcomes and how those align and connect with university learning outcomes, as appropriate -- the first two columns in the University Framework.
