Retirements

Let's hear it for our dedicated faculty and staff!

Several long-time Hamline faculty and staff retired last year.  Their committment to Hamline University is appreciated!

Rita Johnson Assistant Professor Rita Johnson
Rita Johnson, assistant professor in the department of Management and Economics retired last spring after 10 years at Hamline University. In addition to teaching and advising students she worked extensively with the Hancock-Hamline Collaboration, serving as Hamline's liaison for the past 5 years. She also served as LEAD director for the CLA's experientially-based learning requirement. During retirement, she plans to take a year to "watch the grass grow" and reflect on the next direction for her life's work. She will also continue as Chair of the Board of Global Citizens Network, a non-profit organization that sends small groups to work side-by-side with people in rural communities around the world on projects they have identified as important to their communities.


Janice Simons, Office of Admission
Janice Simons, a part of the Hamline University Office of Admission for 29 ½ years, also retired last spring.  Jan was responsible for processing incoming applications for CLA students and generating daily correspondence to application (decision letters, incomplete and complete notices, etc).  Jan also did data entry at the recruitment level and helped with the recruitment process moving inquiries to applicants.  She was involved in many aspects of the admission process and has been a valued and dependable person on the admission team. 

F. Garvin Davenport F. Garvin Davenport
Longtime Professor of English, Dean of the College, and Vice president for Academic Affairs F. Garvin Davenport will retired from Hamline last spring after 40 years of service.  A retirement party wasl held on Friday, May 12, 2006.

Professor Richard Kagan  
College of Liberal Arts Professor Richard Kagan, history, retired effective August 31, 2005. Kagan is a scholar of East Asia and of human rights, with particular expertise in the history of China, the political history of Taiwan, and the history of the Vietnam war. He is the author of Chen Shui-bian: building a community and a nation as well as numerous newspaper articles, book reviews, and encyclopedia articles. Hamline University wishes to take this opportunity to recognize Kagan’s thirty-two years of service to Hamline, including his leadership to the history department, and his achievements in research and teaching in the areas of human rights, modern Japanese culture, Taiwan’s political history, the Vietnam war, and historical studies of China and Korea.
