Paul Schmaedeke enters his second season as head coach of the Hamline women's cross country program. He is also in his 20th season as head coach of the Hamline men's cross country team. In addition, Schmaedeke is also the director of track operations.

In his first season as head of the women's program, the Pipers finished eighth in the MIAC and 12th at the Central Regional. Schmaedeke was named Central Region Coach of the Year on the men's side after the Pipers won the Central Regional.

In 2005, Schmaedeke led the men's team to their first MIAC Championship since 1977. He received MIAC Coach of the Year accolades for the team's efforts - it was the fourth time Schmaedeke had been named conference coach of the year. The Pipers also finished third in Central Regional and seventh in the NCAA Championships.

Schmaedeke has been involved in Hamline cross country for more than 30 years as a student-athlete, assistant coach, and head coach. As a head coach, Schmaedeke was the MIAC's Coach of the Year in 2000 after the Pipers finished third at the MIAC Championships. The 2000 team was his first to compete in the NCAA Championships. He was also named MIAC Indoor Track Coach of the Year in 2002 and again in 2005.

As an athlete, Schmaedeke was a four-year letter winner in cross country and track at Hamline. He competed on teams that won two MIAC cross country championships (1973, 1975) and four track titles (1974-1977). As a senior, he was co-captain of the Hamline cross country team.

Prior to joining the Hamline staff in 1980, Schmaedeke was the head boys' track and field coach at Concordia Academy High School from 1978-79.

Schmaedeke is noted for his persistance, patience, and well organized training that prepares his athletes to be competitive and steadily progress to their potiential over the course of four years. Schmaedeke also lectures on training theory as a faculty member of the USA Track and Field Level II Coaches Certification School. He has spoke numerous times at the Minnesota High School Coaches Clinic for track and field.

Schmaedeke earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Hamline in 1977. He later earned his master's from the University of Arizona in physical education in 1980.

 

Keri GoetlKeri Goetl - Assistant Coach

Keri Goeltl enters her second season as an assistant to the Hamline women's cross country program. 

After an outstanding high school career at Portage (Wis.) High School, she became the top distance runner at Hamline in the 1990s.  She won 10 All-MIAC honors and was an MIAC champion in the 5,000 meters her senior year.  Gunderson, a Leader Scholar, was a three-year captain for the Pipers.

She attained a business degree in 1998, and currently works for United Way.  She lives near campus with her husband Tom and daughter Adeline, 1.   Currently, Goetl is the chair of the Women’s Initiative Committee of the Piper Athletic Association.  

 

Adam Frye - Assistant Coach

Adam Frye is in his first year with the Pipers.  He was a four-year letter winner for Luther College (Decorah, Iowa) in cross country and track & field.  Frye was a co-captain on the Norse's 2006 IIAC championship team which placed sixth in the nation.  He was also a co-captain on the Norse track & field team, specializing in the steeplechase. 

Frye is a graduate student in Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota. He graduated from Luther College in 2007 with a degree in Exercise Science.
