The following are examples of bequest provisions that may be helpful to you and your attorney as your charitable estate plans are being prepared.

Sample Language
Unrestricted General Bequests
I give to the Trustees of the Hamline University of Minnesota, a Minnesota nonprofit corporation, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, the sum of _________ dollars to be used for its general purposes.

Unrestricted Specific Bequest
I give to the Trustees of the Hamline University of Minnesota, a Minnesota nonprofit corporation, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, [insert here a description of the real or personal property to be given] to be used for its general purposes.

Unrestricted Residuary Bequest
I give [my residuary estate] to the Trustees of the Hamline University of Minnesota, a Minnesota nonprofit corporation, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to be used for its general purposes.
Note: The residuary bequest form can easily be adapted to a percentage allocation to benefit multiple charitable and/or noncharitable beneficiaries.

Contingent Gift of Residuary Estate
I give my residuary estate to [insert name of person] if he/she survives me. If [insert name or person] does not survive me, I give my residuary estate to the Trustees of the Hamline University of Minnesota, a Minnesota nonprofit corporation, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, to be used for its general purposes.

Endowment Bequest
An endowment gift is permanently invested, and only the earnings are spent each year.
"I give to the Trustees of the Hamline University of Minnesota, a Minnesota non-profit corporation, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, (__dollars) or (__percent of the residue of my estate) to establish the (name of endowment) to be used for the following purposes: (state specific purpose).
If, in the future, it is the opinion of the Board of Trustees of Hamline University that all or part of the income of this fund cannot be usefully applied to such purpose, the university may use the same for any purpose that will most nearly accomplish my wishes."

Restricted Bequest
I give to the Trustees of the Hamline University of Minnesota, a Minnesota nonprofit corporation, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, [insert here the amount in dollars, the percentage of the residue, or a description of the securities, real estate, or other property to be given] to be used for [e.g. an academic department, the library, or technology resources.]
Note: To designate a bequest for a particular school (College of Liberal Arts, School of Law, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Public Administration and Management, or Graduate Liberal Studies Program), you must stipulate that intent in the terms of your Will or Living Trust. Otherwise, your bequest will benefit the University as a whole.

Memorial Bequest
A bequest may be used to memorialize a spouse, relative, classmate, or friend by including language that it is given "in memory of [insert name of person.]"
You can also create a permanent memorial to a loved one by naming an endowment fund in memory of the person(s), e.g. The [insert name of person] Memorial Scholarship Fund. (See previous endowment bequest language sample.)
