Traditional Model
The Master in Public Administration program is offered in a traditional format at our St. Paul Campus. The program is tailored to the scheduling needs of working professionals by offering evening classes and online components. Students select either full or part-time study.
Program Requirements/Curriculum
Students are required to complete 48 academic credits (twelve 4-credit courses) and four Hamline Dialogues. They usually complete the program in 2-4 years; however 7 years is the allowed maximum.
Core Courses
Elective Courses
Students complete three elective courses. Elective courses may be taken in one of three areas of interest, or concentrations: Administering Local Government, Managing State and Local Policy, and Public Dispute Resolution. More on the Concentrations>
Alternatively, students may select their elective courses from the Master in Management and Master in Nonprofit Management curricula.
Final Course
To complete the Traditional Master in Public Administration program, students may choose from one of two final options:
Additional Requirements
- For students with limited economics training: Completion of an economics course is highly recommended.
- For students with limited government sector experience: Completion of an Internship (GPA 8494).
- For international students: Completion of Business Communications (GPA 8307). (To be counted as an elective course.)
Hamline Dialogues Series
Students are required to attend at least four of the Hamline Dialogues over the course of their degree studies. The Hamline Dialogues Series provides a forum for conversation between distinguished guest speakers, graduate students, faculty, alumni, and the community. Topics discussed are of relevance to all sectors: government, business, and nonprofit. Cross-sector involvement allows for an enriched education and networking opportunities.

Dual Degree Option
Students in the Master in Public Administration program may apply to earn a Dual Degree in Public Administration combined with Law, Management, or Nonprofit Management.
