Concentrations and Elective Courses

Master in Public Administration (Traditional Model) Concentrations

Concentrations

There are three concentrations within the Master in Public Administration (Traditional Model). Each allows a student to focus more deeply on one area of interest. Students select three elective courses within their chosen concentration. (Concentrations are not required.)

Administering Local Government

This concentration is suited for those pursuing careers in city and county government. Concentration electives include:

    • Labor Relations (GPA 8120)
    • Critical Issues in Public Administration (GPA 8225)
    • Municipal/County Administration (GPA 8230)
    • Strategic Management and Planning (GPA 8235)
    • Alternative Service Delivery (GPA 8260)

Managing State and Local Policy

This concentration develops basic policy management skills with a focus on specific policy issues. Concentration electives include:

    • Housing and Economic Development Policy (GPA 8130)
    • Contemporary Social Policy Issues (GPA 8223)
    • Critical Issues in Public Administration (GPA 8225)
    • Legislative Practicum (GPA 8250)
    • Social Demographics (GPA 8440)

Public Dispute Resolution

This concentration provides basic skills for resolving public disputes, improving a student’s ability to manage in the public sector. Concentration electives include:

    • Public Dispute Resolution (GPA 8201)
    • Public Negotiation Skills Building (GPA 8221)
    • Public Mediation Skills Building (GPA 8222)
    • Public Arbitration Skills Building (GPA 8228)

Elective Courses

Elective requirements in the Master in Management (Traditional Model) can include courses selected from any of the concentrations or these additional courses:

    • Effective Community Governance (GPA 8232)
    • Social Policy Administration (GPA 8233)
    • Social Identities and Conflict (GPA 8270)
    • Independent Study (GPA 8497
    • Topics in Public Administration (GPA 8498)
    • Certificate in Economic Development
    • Certificate in Human Resource Management
    • Certificate in Public Affairs Management

NOTE: Students may select their elective course from the Master in Management and Master in Nonprofit Management curricula.
