 About the MAT Program

Supportive Learning Environment
All faculty have school-based experience and a commitment to helping students become successful teachers. Support staff help provide a streamlined experience. Services that students find helpful at Hamline include: Bush Memorial Library (with more than 180,000 volumes, 800 periodical subscriptions, and online access to one million more titles), the Teaching and Technology Curriculum Center, the Writing Lab, Walker Health and Fitness Center, the Hub food court, Career Services, and Hamline's computer labs.

Urban, Multicultural Clinicals
Hamline University's education theme "to develop reflective practice in an urban, multicultural context" is integrated throughout our program. Ours is a clinically-based program where students experience field placements in urban public schools in conjunction with courses as they progress toward full-time student teaching.

Conveniently Scheduled Courses
Designed for flexibility, MAT courses are offered in the evening (5:00-9:30 p.m.) with daytime field experiences. During the fall, spring, and summer terms, courses typically meet once a week. During the January term, courses may meet more often. Field experiences require some school day hours in urban settings. Students may attend this program on a full-time or part-time basis.

Opportunities Outside of Class 
Education students may choose to be involved in tutoring or collaborative research projects in cooperation with nearby K-12 schools. Students may elect to student teach abroad through the HOST program at Hamline or the GST program at the U of MN- Morris. Hamline also hosts guest speakers on current educational topics. Recent speakers include: Beverly Daniel Tatum (Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?), Tou Ger Xiong (The Hmong in America: A Performance Piece), and Charmaine Wijeyesinghe (Bi-racial Identity Development in Students).

Time Commitment
Completion of the first licensure coursework ranges in length of time, and is dependent on the applicant's prior coursework, professional development, and preferred pace of study.

MAT candidates may earn a master's degree by completing additional requirements that consist of two courses, Public Policy: Design and Action and Capstone Practicum, and a culminating capstone. These requirements must be completed within seven years of finishing the licensure coursework.

Job Market for Teachers
Researchers estimate that 40 percent of Minnesota teachers will be retiring in the next five years. Although Hamline cannot guarantee anyone a teaching position, we are proud to say that our students have exceeded the norm in securing teaching positions.
