About Hamline
Creative and innovative teaching and learning attract a diverse student body of nearly 4,600 undergraduate and graduate students to Hamline University. Challenged to create and apply knowledge in local and global contexts, Hamline students develop an individual and community ethic of social justice, civic responsibility, and inclusive leadership and service.
Ranked first in Minnesota among comprehensive master’s universities by U.S.News & World Report , Hamline is also Minnesota’s first university, founded in 1854, and among the first co-educational institutions in the nation.
Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Hamline is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and offers courses and degree programs in Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

Degrees offered: master of arts in education; master of arts in teaching, which provides initial licensure for those seeking a new career in teaching; master of arts in education with an emphasis in natural science and environmental education; master of arts in English as a Second Language (ESL); doctorate in education.
- The graduate school's ESL program, the largest in Minnesota, is internationally recognized.

Licensure (including principal, superintendent, special education director, and additional licenses in specialty areas), certificate (including urban teaching), and continuing education programs serve more than 8,000 educators annually.

Graduate School of Liberal Studies at a glance
- Degrees offered: master of arts in liberal studies (MALS), master of fine arts in writing (MFA), master of fine arts in writing for children and young adults (MFA).

The interdisciplinary MALS program offers students the opportunity to range freely among academic, artistic, spiritual, and professional issues and ideas.

The MFA program is Minnesota’s first graduate-degree program in creative writing. It is distinguished by its interdisciplinary emphasis and its support of work in more than one genre.

The new MFA in writing for children and young adults is a low-residency program featuring award-winning faculty authors and a five-to-one student-faculty ratio.

Publishes Water~Stone Review, an annual literary review featuring both well-known and emerging writers in all genres.

Certificate of Advanced Liberal Studies is available for students already holding a master's degree.

School of Business AT A GLANCE

Undergraduate degree offered: bachelor's degree in business administration with concentrations in finance, general business, international business, management, and marketing.

Graduate degrees offered: master of business administration, master in nonprofit management, master in public administration, and doctorate in public administration. Three JD-master’s programs also offered with the Hamline University School of Law.

Since 2003, master’s degree programs have been offered in a cohort model at the Minneapolis Center, giving students the option to complete their degree in an accelerated time frame and a supportive environment.

Concentrations are offered to students wishing to specialize. In public administration, concentrations are: public dispute resolution, administering local government, and managing state and local policy. In management, concentrations are: conflict management, international management, health care management, and human resource management.

Continuing studies programming such as the Hamline Dialogues bring students, alumni, and the professional community together to discuss current topics. Certificates and institutes offer continuing education for professionals in business, government, and nonprofit organizations.

Diversity of students, including a significant international student body, provides a distinctive learning atmosphere in which cross-cultural, as well as cross-sector, exchanges occur.
