PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS

Modeling Excellence and Innovation in Teaching

CGEE is a recognized provider of professional development for science teachers and consulting in science/environmental education curricula and projects. Lee Schmitt and Peggy Knapp are experienced, quality facilitators in the areas of inquiry methods, environmental and community-based projects, best-practices in science teaching and facilitating professional learning communities. Workshops are interactive, inquiry-based, and custom-designed to translate directly to teaching in the classroom.

Through the Minnesota Math and Science Partnership Program and with support from 3M Foundation, Hamline University CGEE has received funding to provide standards-based, rigorous science professional development to teachers of science throughout the state. The Minnesota Science Teachers Education Project (MnSTEP) offers 10, no-cost, summer science workshops for elementary and secondary teachers of science through regional, five-day summer institutes. Food, stipend, two graduate credits, MnSTA membership and resources are provided for teachers. MnSTEP also provides no-cost licensure programs in high school chemistry (ChemCAL Project) and physics (PhASE Project).

CGEE also contributes to Hamline University's outstanding heritage of teacher training by arranging co-sponsored graduate credit with schools and providing graduate-level courses that strategically enhance inquiry-based, experimental learning. CGEE offerings, published in the Graduate School of Education’s Professional Development for Educators catalog courses, are facilitated by scientists, master teachers and Hamline professors on a wide range of environmental and science topics. Some courses enhance the effectiveness of face-to-face instruction through extended online contact, building community while supporting curriculum integration back in the classroom. Others, offered completely online, connect educators, faculty, and resource experts around the globe.
