Administrative Licensure Programs
Minimum Minnesota state requirements for an administrative license
LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Each administrative license requires:
- A master’s degree;
- Initial competency assessment to determine competencies already met and to set a plan for licensure coursework completion;
- Minnesota requires a candidate to have 3 years of teaching experience for the Principal, Superintendent, and Director of Special Education license, or satisfy Minnesota Rule Chapter 3512.0700, subpart 4; and
- 20 additional credits, including:
- GED 8145: Developing the School Administrative Licensure Portfolio (2 semester credits)
- EDUC 0090: Initial Competency Assessment (1 credit fee assigned/no credit or grade granted)
- GED 8100: Leadership and Organization in Schools, Part I (4 semester credits)
- GED 8125: School Finance (2 semester credits)
- GED 8142: Education Law (4 semester credits)
- One for each K–12 license you seek (4 semester credits each):
- GED 8135: The Principalship
- GED 8120: The Superintendency
- GED 8115: The Special Education Directorship
- Field Experience — 320 clock hours within a 12-month period (4 semester credits).
- Students must register for and attend 4 seminar sessions.
- Electives — including transferred coursework — that pertain to leadership competencies (varies by individual program).
- EDUC 0091: Portfolio Presentation and Exit Assessment — candidate demonstrates license-related knowledge, skills, and abilities to a review board of K–12 practitioners and Hamline education faculty (2 credit fee assigned/no credit or grade granted).
