Center for Second Language
Teaching and Learning (SLTL)

ATLAS is a program of SLTL at
Hamline University.  Click here to visit the SLTL site.

ATLAS brings Hamline faculty expertise in adult and ESL teacher education to provide best practice resources and professional development for Adult Basic Education (ABE) teachers, staff and administrators across the state.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

ATLAS Patsy-2/8/08 workshop

ATLAS provides professional development in many areas, including English as a Second Language, culture and language in the adult classroom, learner-centered teaching, work skills, and more.  Trainings are coordinated by Regional Professional Development Coordinators operating in eight regions across Minnesota.  Through ATLAS, ABE teachers and administrators statewide have access to high-quality, practical training and support.  In addition, ATLAS/ Hamline University will provide opportunities for training attendees to receive CEUs and/or earn graduate credit.

ATLAS staff members also participate in the planning and/or implementation of other workshops and conferences, such as the ABE Statewide Summer Institute, the EL/Civics Workshop for EL/Civics grantees, and training for ABE Program Support Staff.

TRANSITION TO POST-SECONDARY

One important focus for ATLAS is to work with the Minnesota Department of Education to facilitate training and projects to address the gap between ABE and post-secondary education.  Current projects include an annual Transitions Conference, a curriculum alignment initiative, and a mentoring program for ABE instructors.

 ESL WORKSHOP

Each year, Hamline hosts a two-day intensive training for ESL instructors and administrators from across the state.  As part of Hamline’s Center for Second Language Teaching and Learning, ATLAS now coordinates the annual ESL Workshop.  ATLAS collaborates with the Minnesota Department of Education to identify topics of greatest need/interest and to develop and deliver worshops addressing those areas.  The 2008 conference will take place on May 20 & 21.

MINDQUEST ACADEMY

Mindquest Academy (MQA) is an innovative resource of college preparatory online materials, staff development, and program development for ABE, MnSCU, and individual ABE programs and community/technical colleges.

ATLAS is a partnership between Hamline's Center for Second Language Teaching and Learning and the Minnesota Department of Education/Adult Basic Education (ABE).  ATLAS is funded as an approved state ABE supplemental services provider.
