The Center for Literacy & Learning is dedicated to the professional development of teachers in the area of classroom-based literacy acquisition and development. The Center offers workshops, courses, study groups, and conferences that help teachers develop practical theory for effective teaching of language in meaning-based, literature-rich classrooms, where students are supported and challenged to become complex and critical thinkers.

The Center's Work

The Center provides educators with the latest research and perspectives on classroom literacy instruction. Practitioner focused graduate courses encourage and empower teachers to incorporate teaching strategies that increase students' literacy achievement, regardless of ethnic or socio‑economic backgrounds. The Center for Literacy & Learning

  • Is dedicated to supporting teachers to become lifelong learners, leaders in their schools and communities, and agents of change.
  • Honors and recognizes teacher’s experiences and expertise as critical factors in effective literacy instruction.
  • Offers language arts courses and certificate programs on literacy topics of current interest
  • Focuses pedagogy on a balanced literacy approach to instruction
