The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) prepares students for the initial teaching license while earning a master’s degree. This program is ideal for working adults who want to fulfill their intention of entering a meaningful profession to make a difference in the lives of young people.

- Hamline faculty recognize the work and life experience that incoming students bring to the program. With real-world K-12 experience, faculty will help you develop practical skills, such as classroom management, to ease your transition to a new career in education.
- Flexible scheduling allows students to continue current employment as they transition toward leading tomorrow’s classrooms. Program attendance may be full-time or part-time, according to your preferred pace of study. With a part-time course load, program completion takes about two and a half to three years. Classes typically meet once a week in the evening.
- Field placements are integrated throughout the program. Practice what you learn in your courses as you progress toward full-time student teaching. Develop the skills, content, and confidence to become a highly qualified teaching professional.

Five categories of teaching licenses available
1. Elementary K-6 with a 5-8 specialty in communication arts and literature, science, mathematics, or social studies.
2. Elementary K-6 with K-8 specialty in world languages and cultures (French, German or Spanish).
3. Secondary 5-12 in the specialty areas of chemistry/science, communication arts and literature, life science/science, mathematics, physics/science, or social studies.
4. Secondary 9-12 in the specialty areas of chemistry, life science, or physics.
5. K-12 in English as a second language (ESL), French, German, music-instrumental, music-vocal, physical education, Spanish, theater arts and dance, or health 5-12/physical education K-12.
